1. Who started Romance Writers For Change?
Deidre Knight and a group of people who love RWA but want the attitude towards digital publishing to change began this group on June 19. As of June 27, there were nearly 650 members.
2. Why did Romance Writers For Change get started?
Deidre Knight wrote a post about digital publishing rights and how RWA needs to change towards that. As of June 25, 2009 there were 31 blog posts linked and 318 comments on Deidre’s post. She wrote this post in response to Diane Pershing’s June letter in the RWR.
No, we can not post that letter. If you are a member of RWA, you can read it. If you are not, you will have to find someone who will share it with you. Posting it would a copyright violation.
Then RWA President Diane Pershing responded with RWA’s views on digital publishing vs print publishing. As of June 25, 2009 there were 19 blog posts linked and 280 comments.
That’s nearly 600 comments between those two posts with the overwhelming majority agreeing that RWA needs to change.
On Twitter, people were using the hashtag (which is a way to track conversations on Twitter) of #RWAFail. Someone said they did not want RWA to fail but they did want RWA to change. You can see that here #RWAChange which will take you to the search function on Twitter for #RWAchange specifically. RWAChange was the temporary name for Romance Writers For Change.
3. Is Romance Writers For Change trying to change the print model $1000 advance minimum?
Absolutely not! Romance Writers For Change wants RWA to recognize that there are at least two viable business models and offer education on both equitably. RWCHANGE does not advocate for the removal of the $1000 advance in print but for the inclusion of the no-advance, higher-royalties model of digital publishing as viable as well.
4. What if I’ve already turned my proxy in? Can I revoke it?
Yes, all proxies are revocable. Proxy Form B on the RWA site revokes all prior proxies. You can find a hosted Proxy Form B here.
How many proxies do we need? Our target is 1018 which is 10% of the RWA membership.
5. I am not a member of RWA. Do I need to be to join Romance Writers For Change?
No, but if you truly want to effect change in this group, you should be. We need your voice and your vote at RWA National in D.C.
6. Do we have a mission statement?
Yes. Click here for our Mission Statement.
7. Is anyone going to run for the RWA Board of Directors?
Yes. A slate has been started. If you are interested in running for one of the positions, please say so on the loop and then send your name to Arwen Lynch who is keeping track of the slate. Otherwise check back here after RWA Nationals and see the candidates.
